An Evening with Neil Sperry

neil-sperry.jpgTexas horticulturist Neil Sperry is a household name in our backyard. Last spring, with the help of Calloway’s, we choose indigenous plants that returned strong this year, thanks to Neil’s Complete Guide to Texas Gardening. Like perennials, his book comes up again and again as a solid reference. Meet the man behind the book, and the gardener’s voice on KRLD (1080 AM) since May 1980, at the DMA on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. Join him for Green Landscaping–Facts and Fantasies–and the latest trends in Texas gardening. You mean “like perennials, his book comes up again and again” right?

If it were like an annual, it’d be dead by winter.

People are so mean and so darn picky! Yes, “annuals” are the plants you have to dish out beaucoup bucks for every spring, “perennials” are suppose to re-appear in the garden year after year, multiply and divide. (That’s how I remember annuals = cha-ching.) But in my most un-green thumbs, all my “perennials” seem to be annuals!

Christine, this is a great book and we have used it like a garden Bible for years. Hint: I save all the tags from the plants I try (after washing, of course) and file them in the back of the book with notes about where I planted them, how well they fared. I also keep receipts. I can never seem to find anything beside begonias to stay alive in the hot Texas August sun…and they are great but we tire of them. Anyone got any other crafty ideas?
